Chapter 407: 406, 220% excess task completion _1
The grain storage area was home to a number of cylindrical stone warehouses with arched tops.
Rectangular vents on the warehouse walls allowed for air circulation, ensuring that the stored grain did not spoil due to dampness.
The entrance that Su Yu and his team took was not the main one, but a side entrance on the southern side of the storage area.
Now, General Mekron was leading Su Yu and his team northward towards the main entrance.
As they walked, he was also engaging in casual conversation with Su Yu and his companions, overly eager to please.
Occasionally, they would pass elite soldiers in grey armor, the resident troops of the storage area.
Upon seeing General Mekron, the troops would immediately salute, “Greetings, General Mekron!”
However, General Mekron would neglect these soldiers, focusing his attention entirely on Su Yu and his team.
Anduin was his main target for schmoozing.
While deflecting the general’s small talks, Anduin was simultaneously assessing the condition of the grain warehouses.
But after a while, he noticed something odd.
They had walked from south to north, passing numerous grain warehouses, but General Mekron showed no signs of stopping. He just kept leading them towards the main entrance.
Anduin then asked in surprise, “General Mekron, can we not collect grain from these warehouses we are passing by? Must we walk such a long distance?”
“Certainly, Chairman,” General Mekron courteously grinned. “The grain in the warehouses has to go through a strict inspection and drying process. The warehouses in the back contain mostly old grain, surely we can’t offer spoiled grain to Nemesis, right?”
“That’s a fair point,” Anduin nodded and didn’t question further.
Seeing Anduin so easily appeased brought a sigh of relief from General Mekron.
His refusal to take grain from the warehouses at the back had nothing to do with it being old grain. After all, the agreement didn’t specify that the grain couldn’t be spoiled, and he would’ve been more than happy to give the Goldfinch’s people old grain.
The truth was, he didn’t dare to take grain from the warehouses at the back.
While these warehouses appeared to be full, it was merely a facade. Only a thin top layer was actually grain.
To give an example, let’s use a standard grain warehouse near him.
The warehouse was 13.5 meters high, theoretically filled with 10 meters worth of grain.
However, in reality, only the top 1, 2 meters in the warehouse were grain. The bottom 8, 9 meters were filled with fillers like hay and rocks.
This 8, 9 meters worth of grain was, of course, embezzled by the officers.
In case there was an inspection, they simply had to burn the warehouses down, blame it on accidental fires, and their corruption would remain hidden.
If they were to open these warehouses now and Su Yu and his team saw the large rocks and hay underneath, wouldn’t that expose everything?
Therefore, even if his life depended on it, General Mekron wouldn’t dare open these warehouses.
…
Although Anduin was the Chairman of the Empire, he was quite oblivious to such small-scale corruption, thus he simply nodded off the explanation without giving much thought;
Su Yu, on the other hand, was well aware of the corruption inside grain warehouses. In his previous life, he had completed a task of “investigating frequent grain warehouse fires” and had uncovered a whole nest of “rats” within the Lai Yin system.
However, as it didn’t concern him, he chose not to expose it. As long as he received enough grain, he couldn’t care less about the internal politics of Lai Yin.
…
The five of them continued on their way, eventually arriving at a warehouse located next to the main entrance.
General Mekron smiled, opening the warehouse door. He turned to Su Yu and said, “Nemesis, the grain in this warehouse and the ones nearby were recently harvested. The quality is guaranteed, no spoilage at all. I’m sure they will be to your satisfaction!”
Simultaneously, Mekron uttered a silent prayer of thankfulness.
Luckily, they hadn’t touched the newly harvested grain. Otherwise, there might’ve been a real risk of not having enough grain for Su Yu.
“I appreciate it,” Su Yu responded warmly, nodding to General Mekron and stepping into the warehouse.
General Mekron wasn’t lying, the warehouse was indeed stocked with freshly harvested grains.
Without any hesitation, Su Yu started putting the grain into his necklace.
General Mekron stood by Su Yu’s side, keeping a record of how much grain was being collected.
With each bag of grain loaded into the necklace, Su Yu’s mission log quickly updated.
“Rare mission [Collecting Grain], mission progress +1%.”
“Rare mission [Collecting Grain], mission progress +1%.”
“Rare mission [Collecting Grain]…”
The task progress surged visibly.
After emptying out an entire warehouse, Su Yu’s mission progress increased to 22%!
However, he had only collected 6000 tonnes of grain so far, which was only a tenth of his 60000-tonne target.
Looking like this, the mission completion would be far beyond expected!
Feeling inspired, Su Yu urged General Mekron to venture to other warehouses.
…
Finally, after emptying ten whole warehouses, Su Yu met his target of 60000 tonnes of grain, bringing the mission progress bar to 220%, surpassing the target by 120%!
“Given the high completion rate of this mission, I wonder what kind of reward Alyssa will offer me?” Su Yu thought to himself gleefully.
Now that he had collected all his items, it was time to depart.
In the last emptied warehouse, Su Yu gave Anduin and the other three a fist salute, “Everyone, now that I have all the grain I need, I’ll head back to my country first.”
Anduin opened his mouth, seemingly wanting to say something.
But he didn’t voice it out, instead nodding “Farewell, Nemesis.”
Then Sylvanas, who had been cold and silent throughout, asked, “I forgot to ask you. Nemesis, when are we going to the [Hall of Rebirth]? And when are we going to the Wind Chime Empire to find [Yorick the Soul Shepherd]?”
“Well…” Su Yu gave it some thought.
He checked his game panel and saw that his gaming time for the day was almost used up.
So, he replied, “Let’s plan to go to the [Hall of Rebirth] in half a month. I need some time to prepare… As for [Yorick the Soul Shepherd], the best time would be when our two countries’ armies have officially invaded the Wind Chime Empire and drawn their main forces’ attention.”
“Agreed! I’ll come to the Goldfinch Empire to find you in half a month,” Sylvanas said calmly.
At the same time, Su Yu received a notification for a triggered mission.
“Ding! Triggered epic level campaign mission: [Covert Infiltration into Hall of Rebirth].”
“Mission requirements: Accompany Sylvanas on a covert infiltration into the Hall of Rebirth and assist her in plundering high-quality cursed souls. Mission Progress 0%.”
“Mission rewards: Random rewards based on task completion.”
Then, Sylvanas turned into a wisp of black mist and flew out of the warehouse, “I’ll go ahead. Nemesis, I look forward to working with you.”
Before Su Yu and the others could respond, the black mist transformed Sylvanas disappeared into the horizon.
